» desertblue - Backpacking to Scottish Pubs

I have been to England and Wales but somehow missed out on Scotland. I have this fantasy of backpacking to remote pubs and inns in the wilder areas. It would be very Lord of the Rings, in my fantasies. What do you think?

That would be so cool... they shot it in New Zealand, if you want a place that is very Lord of the Rings-esque! Heheh.

Scotland has been on my to-do list for a long time. It just sounds like a fascinating place!

Hmm, sometimes things are best left to the imagination. I spent a semester in the U.K. when I was in college, and coming face-to-face with all my romanticised notions regarding the brogue, the moors, the friendly country types -- all were shattered when I realized that they were just regular people living their regular lives, same as the rest of us. Which, I suppose, is a lesson in itself. Sorry, not a single hobbit spotted. ;)

Oh dear God Kelby, you are talking to ME, a LOTR fanatic. I know where they shot the films. But since I've been reading the books since the age of 15, and nearly yearly, I always imagined Scottish moors, somehow... happy

Hey, Kelby, Jen and desertblue. Honestly nothing could ever tarnish my fantasy of Scotland, and yes they are just regular folks, but they're regular folks that live in "Scotland". I just feel that somehow, maybe through osmosis, I could walk in the footsteps of Mary Q of S, William Wallace and some of the other great Scots and feel the history, not just read the history, see the history, but 'feel' it. And taste history...that's important...once I made my kids lick a rock known to be millions of years old, now they just kiss me if they have a need to taste history:))
