US Navy saves historic icon in Silicon Valley after a long debate with community support of this well known tourist attraction in the south bay of San Francisco bay area.

A place which is familiar to local people in Silicon Valley (south of San Francisco) as they pass through on the way to/from San Francisco on Hwy 101 is "Hangar One" at Moffett field. This is a tourist magnet and interesting sight to global visitors across the world that come to Silicon Valley.

Although the US Navy has made this major decision to save Hangar One, the next decision is how to disrobe the exterior part of the Hangar One because of contamination in the exterior walls of the building.

The Story Behind Hangar One Aviation Building

This magnificent aviation building at Moffett Field in Mountain View is visible with awe-inspiring proportions was built in 1933 even before the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This 200 foot tall, 8.5 acre Hangar One at Moffett Field housed dirigibles, balloons, and blimps in the early 1900’s.

Actual measurements of the building are: 1,133-feet long by 308-feet wide by 198-feet high per the Moffett Field Historical Museum website. Many people remember the Macon and the Akron dirigibles which flew locally in the early 1900’s.

The item which made these blimps different is that they were kept afloat with non-flammable helium and they were built with very strong spines. This is a very significant item of Bay Area history that unfolded in the early 1900's for south bay residents waiting for the new work opportunities from the industries surrounding Moffett Field. Since World War II, companies like Lockheed, NASA Ames and more – household names have been located around Moffett Field.
