Taychreggan Hotel is an old stone house, originally a humble cattle drover's inn, which has been here, in a lovely part of Argyll, for over 300 years

Most of the beautifully appointed bedrooms overlook the loch and there's a nice sense of style about the whole place. According to the AA (the Automobile Society) it is also one of the most romantic hotels in Scotland.

The hotel nestles in forty acres of woodland and gardens and has its own spit of land that leads directly to Loch Awe, Scotlands longest and some say, prettiest. loch, famous for its brown trout and salmon. The hotel has its own fishing rights, some 23 miles long.

If you really want to get away from it all you can do it here it. Taychreggan is a particularly peaceful place. You wake up in the morning to the sound of gently lapping water and bird calls. It's a bird-watchers paradise., over ninety different species have been seen in the area.

James Boswell and Samuel Johnson, visited the original drover's inn at Taychreggan during their Highland journey in the 18th century. The ancient stone house and courtyard have been beautifully preserved.

There are various tours to choose from, including famous gardens and historical sites. There is so much history in this region of Scotland - from stone circles to ancient battle grounds.

If climbing is your thing, this is the place to be. The Munros are separate mountains over 3000 feet and there are more than 20 within ninety minutes drive from the Taychreggan. It's a big thing amongst climbers to have conquered them all.

The food is excellent, and the menus innovative and beautifully presented. The chef has received a number of well deserved awards and at the end of the day you, should you be so inclined, you can settle down to a dram or two from what the hotel calls its "shameful" range of malt whiskies – over fifty varieties on their list!

The hotel can arrange for you to go sea fishing and diving (from March to December), horse riding, shooting and fishing, and even microlighting and gliding. Pike fishing is all year round and Taychreggan has two boats, with or without outboards, for the use of guests, so why not try your luck?
