In 1948 Greywalls became a country house hotel. It is located on the edge of the village of Gullane, just a few miles east of Edinburgh and the perfect place to stay for anyone wanting to visit the Edinburgh Festival. It has a reputation for fine food and has been described as catering for the hungry golfer and discerning gourmet with equal aplomb.

For those who are not golfers there are walks on long sandy beaches, visits to ancient castles, stately homes and pretty fishing villages - all just a few minutes away. And it’s only a short walk to the local pub for a pre-dinner drink.

Scotland - Greywalls - Gertrude Jekyll’s Garden

One of the many attractions of Greywalls are the beautiful walled gardens - work and inspiration of Lutyen’s colleague the garden designer Gertrude Jeklyll. The two of them were referred to as the‘dream team’ and both were greatly influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement of the late 19th-century. They worked in Europe and North America as well as in Britain.

Jekyll’s meticulously planned the gardens at Greywalls to reflect the symmetry of the house itself, with straight and curving walls and arched doorways.
