Historic London Pubs - The Old Bull and Bush

An Historical 18th-Century Tavern in Hampstead London

Jan 8, 2009 Cathy Smith

The history of The Bull and Bush reaches back to 1721, it is one of London's oldest pubs. It also has a resident ghost who does a bit of haunting from time to time.

Along with many of their other ‘firsts’, it was the Romans who introduced the first pubs to England. In ancient Rome, small shops that served food and wine and possibly some kind of ale were called ‘tabernae’ - the equivalent of our modern day tavern. It was in the 19th century that these taverns became commonly known as ‘pubs’, from the term ‘public house’ which was invented by the Victorians. Today, visiting English pubs and taverns is a popular pastime for visitors to London.

Traditional London Pub in North London

A really good London pub in North London is The Old Bull and Bush, This historic inn is an easy walk from Hampstead Village; it became famous in the 1920’s with the music hall song ”The Old Bull and Bush”, a rather flirty song with lines like: “Come, come, come and make eyes at me down at the Old Bull and Bush'. In summer, sit in the outdoor area in front of the pub overlooking a pretty park and in winter enjoy the warmth of log fires.

Traditional London Pubs: Pub Food

Today, the Bull and Bush has taken on the mantle of Gastro Pub, as have many other pubs in London and the rest of the country. The old image of a typical pub where the only food on offer was potato chips or peanuts has all but disappeared and although bar snacks are still available, the emphasis now is on good quality, tasty food, much of it based on Mediterranean cuisine. How about Tuna Carpaccio + Wasabi Guacamole + Pink Ginger as a starter, followed by Grilled Swordfish Loin + Mango + Chilli + Coriander Salsa, plus yummy desserts to finish. Plus an excellent selection of wines to choose from.

Traditional London Pub Near Hampstead Village

The pub is right on the edge of Hampstead Heath - nearly a thousand acres of woodlands, meadows and a beautiful historic stately home, Kenwood House, which is open to the public and entrance is free. A great thing to do, winter or summer, would be to have lunch at the Old Bull and Bush, explore Hampstead Heath, and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea at Kenwood house.

Traditional London Pubs: A Resident Ghost

Or, in complete contrast, go during Halloween and see if you can tempt the resident ghost to put in an appearance. The pub has been haunted for over a hundred years by a dark figure in Victorian clothing. Recent renovations may have uncovered the reason - bricked up behind a wall in the cellar was an old skeleton and Victorian surgical instruments.
